| ProjectDescription | Background
Context-aware and pervasive applications have a great potential to improve the city dwelling citizen's quality of life. However, much of this potential remains visionary and only basic context-aware and pervasive functionalities have been introduced in commercial products so far. To fully realize the potential of these exciting new techniques, development work is required in many research areas, including embedded systems, signal processing, software architectures, and human-machine interaction. While many of these topics are being studied by a number of research groups, the proposed solutions under development require considerable efforts and time before they can be realized or even eventually commercialized.
We have recognized an opportunity to develop, within realistic and reasonable parameters, novel context-aware and pervasive applications that fulfil real needs and can be commercialized once the prototypes and research stages of the project have been completed.
This opportunity is based on improving the human-machine interaction with a physical user interface and advanced usage of the audition modality. The success of this is based firmly on the unique skills and areas of knowledge represented in the cross-regional resources involved in this project; on the combination of music, media and game design knowledge in Piteå and its surrounding areas, combined with the Oulu area’s competence and experience in mobile applications, robotics and associated technologies.
This project represents a unique and practical opportunity for building new alliances and bridges between the relevant regions. As well as the immediate connections created through the research project, a number of satellite activities are planned. These include interregional seminars and workshops with companies and other interested parties. In addition to identifying potential parties for commercializing the research results, these seminars and workshops facilitate recognizing possibilities for co-operation between companies in the northern regions of Sweden and Finland. To support the development of such co-operation, we have started discussion with the representatives of Multipolis network; about the role that
Multipolis could have to support the co-operation once such possibility has been recognized.
Aim
The purpose of this project is to:
- Through applied research generate new knowledge that enables novel applications that utilize audio modality and physical user interfaces
- Test, verify and utilize the new knowledge by developing innovative application prototypes. After the end of this project, these early prototypes can be used as starting points for development of new, commercial applications in existing or newly formed companies. In this way the research project will live beyond the project period by generating new job opportunities within the region.
- Increase the total knowledge base of the region and contribute to the region’s growing status and to Europe
- Create better opportunities for interregional dialog and co-operation between individuals, research groups and companies
Objective
The goal of this project is to:
- Study audio modality and physical user interfaces in context-aware and pervasive applications
- Through active prototyping perform research and verify and utilize research results
- Create technically based opportunities for new companies and product development
- Empower and help individuals through new technology, both in special needs groups and in main stream applications
- Attract young people to come to/stay in the region by creating interesting job opportunities
