Project NameDetailed inundation planning in the lower part of Tornio River
ProjectDescriptionBackground Since the 70’s has Finland and Sweden co-operate in connection to the inundation in the mouth of Tornio River. A series of major damages after spring flooding as well as ice in 1984 lead to the first investigation and prognostication of the situation in Tornio River. Tornio River has almost yearly inundation often with major damages as a consequence. By town and country planning and as a preventive measure as well as effective and relevant rescuing during an acute flooding situation can damages be of limited extent. Clear and detailed inundation maps are a means of assistance in this work. The maps show which areas that are threatened by flooding when high flow of water. Maps produced in the project will be used for making maps of the risk areas that directive says. They will be used for town and country planning, Rescue Services Agency’s overall inset planning and programme for handling inundation risk. Problem with flooding in Tornio River is often linked to ice damming up. Therefore it is important to study those problems in order to improve prognosis for flooding. Today it’s difficult to make prognosis for ice damming up, to say where it will happen, how much will the water rice and when the ice will let go. There is lack of data and the prognosis there are made today consists of data only from the lower part of the river. Objective and aim Main purpose with this project is that municipalities and concerned authorities on both sides of Tornio River can meet an inundation with as small damage for society as possible. This will be done by Finland and Sweden in a common thorough investigation of areas threatened by flooding along Tornio River as well as informing, education and exercise with people concerned in Rescue Services Agency.
