Project NameForestry impact and water management in Torne International river basin
ProjectDescriptionThe project aims to develop a joint Finnish-Swedish plan of action for the recovery of aquatic environments in the Torne River's international river basins, and strengthen collaboration between actors involved in the work in the water in this area. The project focuses on actions related to historic and contemporary effects of forest industry in the region. The project involves mapping the environmental status and action needed in tributaries, evaluating the environmental reason for forest industry in aquatic environments and detailed action plans for two tributaries of the river basin level. The goal is a concrete and detailed action plan that can be used by regional authorities, municipalities, associations of fish and fisheries at the restoration of streams affected by forestry. The action plan should be anchored among local and regional actors along the Torne River so that future action will work as efficiently as possible. Another target is to harmonize the national assessment tools and a common vision for the measure needs in the Torne River tributaries. The long term goal of the Action Plan is to improve conditions for migratory fish like trout and salmon, which in turn can benefit the fishing and tourism. Other species associated with running water, such as mussels, benefit from measures that improve habitat for fish.
