| ProjectDescription | The overall project objective is to support the development of a transport corridor between the Baltic and Barents region. Corridor would open up new transport opportunities for mining companies and other companies as well as a connection to the northern sea routes. It would also increase employment in the region considerably, and develop cross-border cooperation in many sectors.
Goals of the preliminary project:
- obtain a realistic picture of the international and national grounds that may support construction of a railway from Rovaniemi to Kirkkoniemi
- compare differences between and development thresholds of road transports and railway transports
- identify necessary planning processes and funding models
- increase awareness of the railway project at the national level in both Finland and Norway
