ProjectDescriptionBackground In European Union it’s of crucial important that knowledge about regions in different parts of the world. The Barents Region is an enlarged area for Nordic solidarity but with different conditions for the Russian part compared to the Scandinavian part. Those big differences in living conditions and culture change in a long-term the daily life for inhabitants in the Nordic part. The need for a historical analyze is therefore of great importance both for understanding of similarities and differences between different parts of the region as well as for seeking a new kind of Nordic identity. In the year 2002 a network for researchers as well as research about modernising in Barents region was worked out by an initiative from Luleå technical university. One of the basic ideas was to write a common history book about Barents region from the ongoing research in the region. All historical institutions at universities in Barents region is part of the network. The network has for that reason a character of pioneer activity within the North and European Union. In fall 2007 Luleå technical university was granted funds from Interreg IIIA Kolarctic for a preliminary investigation with purpose to work out organizational possibilities and financing way for producing a historical book for education as well as an encyclopaedia with web publishing about Barents region. The Nordic humanistic and social science research about Barents region is still in its beginning, that’s why there is a big need for international knowledge in this area. Objective The purpose with the project is to strengthen the regional cooperation between universities in northern Sweden, Finland and Norway and to increase their international competiveness. The project will also enlarge level of knowledge among citizens and students. Aim The project will create a lasting co-operation within history and social science between universities with connection to Barents region. The project will also produce a history book and an encyclopaedia of the region.
