Situation among Sami young people in Norway, Sweden and Finland various a lots, not least in the countries. At the same time these young people have much that are common. Some have a strong Sami identity while others have grown up in environment where there was less focus on the Sami culture. Nevertheless they share all challenges and where to express their culture belonging. In spring 2008 child ombudsman presented a report “The rights for participation and influence for Sami children and youth”. Where children ombudsman in Norway, Sweden and Finland establish that the greater part of Sami youth are proud of their Sami culture and identity but at the same time there are lacks in relations to children’s convention. Among other things it is that youth not are part of the questions that are connected to them. Museums have to a lesser extent worked with youth questions and there is limited material in collections connected to youth. Therefore museums want by the project initiate new way of working and methods to work with Sami young people.
Objective and aim
The purpose is that Sami youth will have influence and participate in creating Sami culture heritage. In the project will museums in Norway, Sweden and Finland together develop methods and way of working in order to formulate and document today’s question that are important for young Sami people.
Aim is that youth will have a view in the work at museums and press on in creating Sami culture heritage. They get opportunity to meet and work with young Sami people in other countries. Cooperation/network between museums and with schools strengthen and a unique ethnological source material is produced.
